Participants from Virginia Beach Public Schools, YELLOWHAB and Atlantis Apartments spent the day learning water safety, swim fundamentals and beginner surf skills from professional instructors, including Norfolk State University swim coach Shaun Anderson and pro surfer Jason Borte.
The program is designed to make water access and surf culture more accessible to local youth while building confidence, community and safety skills in and around the water. Lessons include on-land safety instruction, beginner swim education and controlled surf sessions designed specifically for first-time surfers.

Whatβs Next for E-Bikes on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk
E-bikes are becoming a bigger part of getting around Virginia Beach, especially at the Oceanfront, but city leaders say more safety measures need to be in place before rules change on the Boardwalk bike path.
This week, Virginia Beach City Council decided to keep the current restriction in place for now, even after a city task force recommended allowing e-bikes on the bike path alongside new education, signage and speed enforcement efforts.
Council members said they want clearer regulations first, including possible speed limits, age restrictions and stronger enforcement around pedestrian-heavy areas of the Oceanfront. The discussion comes as e-bike usage continues to grow locally, with city leaders pointing to safety concerns and recent accidents in the resort area.
The city is expected to continue working with a new state e-bike safety workgroup before making any future changes.
